Barbara Elizabeth Smith

Barbara Elizabeth (Nowland) Smith, age 66, passed away at home, on February 12, 2025, as a result of a decades long struggle with MS. She left while in the company of her husband, Douglas A. Smith.

Barbara was born October 11, 1958, in Wyandotte, Michigan. She was the daughter of Douglas and Gwen “Penny” (Shone) Nowland. She is survived by her siblings, Douglas “Rick” (Marleen) Nowland of Carleton, MI; Becky (James) Sloniker of Ventura, CA; and David “Dave” Shone of Kettering, OH. She considered her husband’s family as her own and her numerous nieces and nephews and extended family held a very special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her Gramma and Grampa Shone, whom she loved dearly; her mother and father, Douglas and Gwen Shone; and siblings, Linda Cox and Edward Nowland.

Barb and Doug Smith were married December 23, 1996, in Gaylord, MI. She especially enjoyed the Thanksgiving season and was an enthusiastic volunteer for adult literacy programs for basic English.

She approached life with wit and wisdom. She always displayed a quiet grace and loving kindness.

Barb asked that her cremated remains be scattered in a private location she especially loved.
